Unawatuna is one of the finest tourist destinations in the island of Sri Lanka. The Turtle Hatchery Habaraduwa, situated around 8 km from Unawatuna. This island is one of the worlds well-known breeding spots for highly endangered sea turtles. To protect these sea turtles, a number of hatcheries have been opened in the southern coast of the country.  One of them is Habaraduwa Turtle Hatchery. This non-profitable organization is trying their best to protect these endangered sea turtles. You will find lots of turtles here, big and small. Although the big turtles are temporarily kept in the hatchery since they were injured or not healthy. Once these turtles are fit, they will be released to the sea. Even when the small turtles are grown up, they will also be released.

The Maritime Archeological Museum is situated in Galle, within the Galle Fort. This is the only museum in the country that displays the marine biological and anthropological aspects of the southern coastal area to the general public. The museum depicts various passenger and trading watercraft, traditional lifestyle of fishing communities and techniques as well as marine ecosystems and their flora and fauna.

The Martin Wickramasinghe House and Folk Museum is one of the places that explore the lost rural life traditions. It is surrounded by a restored ecosystem with hundreds of indigenous trees and shrubs. For those who do not know Martin Wickramasinghe, he is one of the greatest Sri Lankan novelists of all time. He is acclaimed as the father of modern Sinhala literature.

If you are a true nature lover, dont be reluctant to visit the Kanneliya Rain Forest. It is a forest reserve in the Southern Province of Sri Lanka. This is the last remaining large rainforest in Sri Lanka, other than Sinharaja Rainforest.  It is located about 50 km north to Unawatuna. The rainforest is designated as a biosphere reserve by UNESCO in 2004 and is home to a large variety of endemic flora and fauna.

Another great thing to do in Unawatuna is cycling. Bicycle fans will be able to do cycling across the country that will give you a memorable adventure time.
